The slope

When the wind blows against the side of the mountain, the air is forced to rise: a glider flying in front of the slope stays up as long as there is wind, without a motor.

Bielmonte is at about 1,500 metres, in the mountains above Biella. The slope is used by pilots from many clubs, not just AER.BI members.

We're gathering information on the launch points, the right winds and the local rules: the page will fill in as we go.

Can we fly on the slope?

The wind forecast at altitude, hour by hour. Here you need wind: it has to blow straight onto the slope and be strong enough to hold the glider up.

The verdict will come once the launch points and their winds are filled in. Meanwhile, here is the wind forecast at Bielmonte.

Forecast from the Italian ICON-2I model (ItaliaMeteo-ARPAE) via Open-Meteo. In the mountains the weather changes fast: always watch the sky.

Launch points

We're gathering the launch points: position, right winds and photos coming soon.

Rules and safety

Local rules

The local rules are being updated.

Always, on the slope

  • Only fly with the wind rising up the slope: behind the ridge and with the wind at your back there is rotor, which brings the model down.
  • Don't fly over hikers, cyclists, cars or grazing animals.
  • Before launching, choose where to land and keep it clear.
  • In the mountains the weather changes fast: with low cloud, fog or storms coming, land.
  • Here too you need the A1/A3 certificate, d‑flight registration with the QR on the model and insurance, just like at the field.
  • Take back down everything you brought up.
